I remember when Gov. Jerry Brown of California suggested a flat tax...the Republicans went nuts and called him 'Governor Moonbeam'. As it turned out since then the GOP has embraced the concept. On the downside, this form of taxation would insure that the rich would get richer and the poor would get poorer. Besides that, a flat tax simply wouldn't bring in enough tax money to fund a first world, supposedly middle class, nation. What would result is what the progressive tax was designed in part to prevent....a country where there's a small group that has 90% of everything worth owning, a small middle class that has access to a large percent of the 10% and the vast majority have the crumbs. Social disruption and economic hardship is the result of that kind of tax interface. All 3rd world countires have this problem...private wealth and public poverty! When the progressive tax came into being the business community was all for it because it insured a thriving middle class and a working class that still had some ability to consume. There were enough loopholes in the law so that the rich landed up only slightly less rich. A flat tax could work if it was coupled with a 'wealth' tax, but that will never happen. The progressive tax works...better the devil you know than the devil you don't,

No, i don't. A flat tax sounds very nice. Until you look at the realities--and you always find that the proponents' "flat tax" is geared to favor certain groups.

    here's tow of their scams:

    >a "flat income tax" --but with things like social secrity left "seperate." So if the rich are paying , say, 20%--the middle class and poor are paying 28%.

    >They make the tax only on "earned income"--conveniently ignoring all the things like dividends, stock earnings, etc., etc. Since most of the income of the wealthiest 2% does NOT come from "earned income" the "flat tax" is in fact, nothing more than a tax break for the wealthy.

No. It's regressive, especially when you pile on other flat taxes like sales tax, and so on.

Once upon a time, I am sure it would have lowered my federal tax contribution, but now I own a home and write the interest on my home loan off every year, 12% is going into my 401K, and I only pay 10% on long-term capital gains when I sell some of my stock holdings, so now I am not so sure. I'd have to sit down and figure it out if I was given a figure (let's say 22% would be close, if I have to guess).

I'm in favor of a flat tax. One with a realistic base for the not so fortunate in our society. Believe ot or not, there are people born with a very limited ability to learn. Not everybody can be a nuclear scientist & not every body is a lazy welfare grubbing bum! If everybody would have a deductible before the tax starts to take effect & then EVERYBODY would pay the same tax rate!!! My taxes wouldn't be any different. Nothing, I only earn $12,300 per year. No taxes!!!

Paying isn't non-compulsory. in case you opt for, you could report your return and don't deliver a verify and a large man or woman from IRS will report a tax lien opposed to you and grab your stuff. you additionally can no longer report a return and, at a minimal, IRS will determine your tax for you in a manner that won't eye-catching then upload 25% extra penalty for overdue submitting and a large man or woman from IRS will report a tax lien opposed to you and grab your stuff. Of, for somebody who owes six figures in step with annum and a large man or woman from IRS will come out and study you your rights and factor the thank you to the courthouse. i'm hardly ever partial to the present day administration, yet I nevertheless report my tax returns and deliver money. What you do is your decision.

This country has a progressive tax system, meaning those that make more, pay a higher rate then other people.

If we were to switch to a flat tax system and set it so that it brings in the same amount of tax revenue, taxes for most people would go UP.

Taxes for the wealthy would go down.

    I don't support that.

No, I do not support any income tax; I support a consumption tax.

An income tax discourages work - a consumption tax discourages wastefulness and consumerism. For all those people who think credit-based consumerism is the pillar of our economy, do you really think that's sustainable?

I advocate a flat sales tax on NON-essential items. I would exempt food, clothing, medical, primary residence, used goods, and education from taxes. Taxing everything else would create an automatically progressive tax system that encourages work, recycling, and savings.

i do favor a flat tax, i am not sure how much my taxes would changed...but if we used a percentage flat tax and least i know we are all paying our equal share...and as far as admiring other countries for what they do...i really don't try to compare our country to others...that's the beginning of many problems...people who compare what they have or don't have with others always finds pros and cons in each and are never happy...at some point people should be content instead of complaining...

no I don't, with a flat income tax to generate the same tax revenue as now the tax rate on the poor will be MUCH higher

"Flat tax of 10%....Mine would drop a lot...a whole lot"

yes it's a nice idea but would it generate the same revenue as the current system, I doubt it
