Is there or will they be a Military Tattoo regulation?
I heard that the AirForce and possibly other branches of the military will be making regulations on Recruits about Tattoos like maximum sizes allowed, placement/visibility. Is this true?
In a few years I plan to join, probably the Air Force and I was wanting to know because I was planning to get a Tattoo sometime soon!
My Tattoo will probably be upper arm/ shoulder to where it cant be seen with a t-shirt on.
I plan for a large one on my upper back and maybe shoulders but that will be years and years from now.
Thanks!
I would have asked a recruitor but I know how that goes, you talk to them for 3 seconds they ask your name number and address and you give it to them to not be rude and BAM! they never leave you alone! LOL!Jk
Seriously I was 14 and requested info from the army over the internet and they sent me a letter saying I was too young for info along with a go army poster, and like 2 weeks later the local staff sgt. ended up at my uncle's house accross the road looking for me! ..... Crazy... True... and somewhat Funny! LOL!
Hey Webfoot my Tattoo would not be anything military, it would be a Budo thing. I have been debating tattoos for a while in which I designed several. I was planning to wait until after I join but, last week in one day, without me mentioning it two different family members (from opposite sides) just happened to bring up the subject and both know different Tattoo Artists in which they can both get me some really good deals, like almost half off. On the other hand I was hopeing to have a more Traditional artist to do my work.
I had a rather large and difficult design but decided that if I got one It would be best for me to get the small basis of the Tattoo which would be the three Japanese characters for bushido for wich If I wanted I could add the rest of my design later on if I wanted... I also thought of just putting its first character "BU" which stands for fighting, but I would probably go for all three because of its meaning.

The information for the Air Force is true for the most part, but many commands are starting to adopt a variable policy. In short, they're starting to come down hard on the size and visibilty issue.
When someone is wearing the short sleeve blue dress shirt, they don't want to see the tattoo.
When I went in the AF in 1986, I was told that if I wanted a TS clearance, it would be best if I didn't have any tats. I didn't and I still don't have any.
Consider this... whatever career you wish to have to sustain you for a good part of your oung life, think twice before you get inked. Most of the folks I talk to regret it after a few years. It doesn't matter if it can be seen or not. I've seen some great ones and it was a shame to cover them up... but it's even a bigger shame when they wish they never got it.
Good luck!

Yes all military has regulations on them, they are getting lighter, if it will be on your back and shoulders and it is not offensive or gang related then it should not be a issue. When it becomes a issue is if it goes up the back of your neck so it can be see above atee shirt, or down your arms past a long sleeve, on your hands or your face. Check with a recruitor but those are the big things that will stop it.

many branches are starting to enforce these policies. the marine corps, i know for sure, since my husband is a SGT in USMC, that they no longer allow people to have tattoos visible with a t-shirt on. so, if you're in a t-shirt, then all tattoos must still be covered.
if my husband were to get a tattoo on his forearm tonight, then monday morning he'd be getting in major trouble.
however, this obviously does not apply to troops that already have the tattoos.
so, if you are thinking about a joining the armed forces, then i recommend you stick to tattoos that can be hidden.
also, keep in mind that there are some jobs that do not allow ANY tattoos at all.
my husband has submitted a package for warrant officer. if he gets it, then they will take pictures of his entire body and both of his tattoos. it all has to be on record.
very interesting.

I don't know about the Air Force, but I can tell you about the Marines. You can't have anything below elbows or knees. It also can't be offensive. Tattoos can't be gang-related, can't imply drug use like a marijuana leaf, and it can't imply rebellion against the government like a symbol of anarchy. I am sure you have enough common sense for that one though.

Each service has different regulations. The Coast Guard, in particular, is getting especially strict.

There already is. It is considered destruction of government property to get an offensive tattoo. However, like you say, it should be in an area that can be covered up.

for initial accessions, tattoos may not show while in uniform,. No gang related tattoos allowed. It is possible that while in, you could be prohibited from getting ANY whatsoever.
