Windows No Disk error
Q. With no apparent cause, a window pops up on my computer that says "Windows-No Disk. There is no disk in drive. Please insert a disc into drive." What does this mean and how do I get rid of it?
A. This error is usually caused by having an external drive connected to your computer and having that drive configured with the drive letter "C", then having no disc in the drive when you boot the computer.
It's not terribly common, but sometimes when setting up a computer with multiple drives, some drive other than the main hard drive will get configured as the C drive.
Windows really works best when the main hard drive (where the operating system is installed) is designated as drive letter C.
Unless you are willing to reload all of your software, you will not be able to re-designate the main drive as C, but you will be able to change the external drive to some other letter designation.
To do this, insert a disk into your removable drive and Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Manage. Go to Disk Management and right click the drive you want to change and select Change Drive Letter and Paths.
Click on the removable drive and select Change and then you can select a new drive letter designation from the dropdown list.
This is a pretty straightforward fix and the good news is that Windows XP will not let you accidentally change the drive letter of your main hard drive. Only secondary and external drives can be modified.
