First Birthday Etiquette?

I have a few months before I have to worry about this, but I just read an article that suggested opening presents after the party to avoid a meltdown. It seems like a good idea to me, but is it rude?

It may help at the time but guest love to see a baby's face when they see what they were given. How about making a goody bag for the kids and hand them out while your child is opening presents

I have never liked that suggestion! I think it is rude! Try opening presents before cake. And if you little one isn't interested, open them yourself and show your little one it's new toys! Make sure you send thank you cards to everyone who gave a gift!

Yeah people like to see you open presents

Maybe...people WANT to see their gifts be greeted by a huge smile, but not all babies react that way so it's a touchy subject. I'd go ahead and open them; nobody will get offended if that happens, it's just a baby!

    Congrats!

I'm no Martha Stewart (something for which I thank God every day), but I believe it is considered perfectly acceptable etiquette to fall asleep from fatigue and/or soil oneself from excitement at one's first birthday party.
