Pregnant blood pressure increasing as weight increases?

I am 16 weeks pregnant. Before pregnancy ,I was 5'3 115 pounds so far I have gained 14 pounds. As I am gaining weight, my blood pressure is increasing as well. Today it was 128 over 60 or 90. The nurse said my top number was high for me. My doctor said my blood pressure looked fine. I'm just wondering why it would be increasing? Any ideas?

As with weight gain in general an increase in blood pressure happens during pregnancy. Think about it, your heart is pumping around a lot more blood volume than it was before. I have been told to stay away from high sodium foods to keep my blood pressure down this time, and it worked. First pregnancies can have more symptoms than consecutive pregnancies. This time I have not had the water weight gain, the high blood pressure, and the drastic weight gain I had the first. Just keep remembering it will all work out at some point because there is only a certain period of time your baby has to be inside your body (hence the term Estimated Date of Confinement). Take care.

I had the same problem w/ my 1st kid and now possibly my 2nd. I just asked a question of this sort. I extremely overweight so that is were the most of my problems come in. I gained nearly 70 lbs in water weight. be mindful of that. excess water puts the heart in strain which makes the blood pressure go up. Decrease the salt, drink lots of water and ask the doctor about methadopa a blood pressure med that is safe for pregnant women

If you gain weight too quickly your blood pressure starts going up. Just be careful and make sure you follow your Dr.'s advise on how much weight you should be gaining at this stage.

It happens to lots of women during pregnancy it usually goes away after birth. It is likely increasing as you put on weight, also if you are nervous or had to walk a ways to get there it could have elevated it.

Is this your first child? Are you under any stress? Many things can cause a persons blood pressure to rise. Maybe you were just having one of those days. If you are concerned about your B/P you could go to your local drug store and purchase a B/P cuff to monitor at home. Make sure you ask Pharmacists about the accuracy of the product. You may also want to watch your diet. Some things such as sodium can cause B/P to rise. And do I know how cravings can get when your pregnant, he he. You may be taking in more sodium than you realize. Your Dr. is the pro here but sometimes they get busy and forget about the little things that raise our anxiety. If so, it's perfectly OK to monitor it for yourself. This will help you distinguish if it's a one time thing or something that needs monitored more closely. Oh ya, CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!

I'm a paramedic. We are taught that pregnant women's BP goes up, and the pulse goes down. The nurse is "right" in saying it's high for you, but should also have said it's "normal" in pregnancy. :) Besides, the "normal" BP is 120/80, so you aren't far from normal for the average person.

Don't let the nurses scare you. If your doctor told you that your BP is fine, it's fine. As you gain weight, your body is going to change. As your body changes through your pregnancy, your blood pressure, body temperature, a lot of things are going to change, so be prepared with a list of questions to ask your doctor if you become concerned.

The only thing I can tell you to be weary of, is something called pregnancy induced hypertension. It's a type of high blood pressure that occurs in a low percentage of pregnant women and should be monitored. You aren't anywhere near the numbers that would indicate you should be watched, but I would definitely discuss it with your doctor if you notice that it's continually getting higher. It's more likely to occur in women under 20 or over 40, or in those who are carrying twins or expecting multiples. I'm providing a link to an article that might explain it a little better.

Your BP sounds like it's fine, like others have said; but you know your body better than anyone, and if you feel like something is starting to go wrong, you need to discuss it with your doctor so that he can either reassure you that everything is fine, or take steps to resolve any issues you're having.

    Good luck!

BP is not a issue until it reaches the 150 area. Not sure on the little number. But i would say yours is just fine.

That sounds normal to me. That is what mine usually runs. They say it is fine. That I have led the perfect pregnancy and I am 34 weeks
