This happened to my old car. When it did happen it was the computer for the car. There was an electrical issue. I would suggest contacting a mechanic.

Take it to the shop, I'd say. You either have some bad wiring or a systemic failure. If you want to know more have the technician use his code reader and see what the error code is for. You could get a reader at the parts store but if you don't know how to interpret the code and trouble shoot, it's likely you may not know how to replace or fix the faulty part.
PS a computer controlled speedometer won't read correctly if the throttle data or other readings (the transmission has at least one sensor) and you'll either have no digits or the needle will NOT read correctly and at some point you will get a ticket for speeding and possibly a fine for not maintaining a safety based system.

If the car cranks ok, but won't start, check for good spark with the tester below, and if you don't have it, replace your distributor. Never crank the engine without all the plug wires hooked up or you'll likely damage the ignitor and ignition coil.

Sounds silly but the speed sensor may be at fault same thing happened in mine and it turned out to be this sensor. Easy fix if you an turn a screwdriver

My accord does that also. They are just old. It is 17 years old. Check your wiring to your fuse box. That is how my dad fixed mine. My heater went out also due to the wiring.

Before you take it to a mechanic, try this:
Disconnect the battery cables for 3 minutes, then reinstall them.
