Generally, yes, for reasons that have to do with emancipation, career and studies mostly, the modern way of life, the need to acquire more experience in life, independence, modern views on marriage and parenthood, modern beliefs about relationships etc.

Uncertainty and anxiety are common nowadays...

Unfortunately there are a lot of fertility problems in this country - who knows why ...also Greek women tend be sexually active later than other europeans (not a bad thing!) Many women worldwide have children out of wedlock whereas Greek women (thankfully) get married etc. Often studying comes first - followed by a few years working - which means when it's the 'right' time for them they are older and therefore conceiving can be more difficult - which probably explains the fertility problems. I had mine at 32 and 36 so there's still hope for the late starters.

There is many interesting literature on this subject, and I can tell you this is the trend not just in Greece or Europe in general, but also in many other countries worldwide.

According to EC data, the mean age at childbearing is 29 years, and Spain is a prime case here, since Spanish women are now the oldest first-time mothers in Europe, and arguably in the world, bearing the first child, on-average, at around 29.

What pure statistics can't answer is: why is this happening? Reasons can vary from physical, psychological, economical and social. With more education and more freedom, I guess you start to think more about pros's and con's, you can choose freely not only when it comes to career, but also marriage (and the marriage institution is also in crisis). This is really a complex question, related with a position of a women in modern society, with all aspects of it.

Let's add to all this, that Greeks (I am Greek too) have become more egoists and declare they are not ready to have a family because they are not ready to give up everything for a child! I don't get it. How did our parents (when women were not working) manage and we can't?

I am really sorry to write about it, but I hear it everywhere all the time. Everyone wants to live their life for...ever and when they understand it's late to have children, they get frustrated or they cannot find a man who suits them.

To find the right person it's not easy and certainly you cannot order it whenever you like!

I think that now the greek woman have children later than before because they are affraid to don't have enough money to feed it and they want to have a house and a good job to have a baby. The mother of my husband (greek) was 17 when my husband is born but my sister in law has her first baby at 31 years old.... changing of mind!

It is not only a matter of women, but men too. They don't want to have children early, so if a woman doesn't want to get married with a much older guy than herself, she doesn't have children early either.

my mom had me when she was 21...I don't think that I'd evr get married that young...Greek women are 50-50 I guess...I know many who prefer careers but also a lot who got married young...however, it's a matter of our times, a decade ago most women would get married very young...
