What kind of soup?
The general rule is foods containing potentially hazardous foods - meat, dairy, eggs, etc - can be safely refrigerated up to 5 days. If you know are going to keep the food past that time, then it should be frozen.
While food may be perfectly safe past the 5 day window, food does not get better or safer with age - only men do that! And since there are currently no in-home test that can be performed to assure safety of a food, research indicates that most properly held potentially-hazardous foods will remain safe for 5 days.

My mom home made soup always stored for at least 5 -7 days. But, the leftovers she usually froze it and used it at will whenever she wanted some. I normally store my soup for about 5 days. It gets better each day the seasoning sets in it.

Soups are better the day after cooking and even a couple of days after that. If it is stew or a soup that is not cream based, then freeze it in portions. Most soups freeze beautifully.
