How do I find out what boat my grandfather was on in WW II?

My husband and I both had grandfathers in the U.S. Navy, specifically, in the Pacific fleet. We were talking the other day and thought how cool it would be if they had served on the same boat. I'm an amateur genealogist trying to find this out and I'm running into brick walls everywhere. Is there any help that anyone could give me?

You need to send for their military service records from the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis MO. It's a quick and easy process. Here's the link.

The other place you can get help is from the funeral director(s) who handled their final arrangements. They would have run a military service record on each of your dads to see if they qualified for military honors at their funerals.

Well, if I can find my Great, Great Grandfathers Civil war service records I think you can find what you want if you have some information, such as, Navy serial #, SS#, or any other identifying ID other than his name, you may be able to track him through name and home town, but if he came from a big city you may have problems because there could be more than one with same name, but it's worth a shot.

First you could contact the Dept Of Naval affairs, or the National Archives ( I did), they will charge you for the search and documents, I got about 2 hundred pages, it took about 5 weeks and at that time cost 66 dollars, it could be more now. You can google the National archives and get the info, that's how I did it. If he belonged to any VFW, they should have the info that you need as well, certainly what ship he was on., you would need to google that to unless you know what post he belonged to. They do have a national hdq's but I don't know where, that's where google can help, just enter VFW National headquarters. Other than that, if you or any family member knows of any of his old friends who may still be alive, they might know even if they were not in the navy, you know how Veterans tell war stories to anyone who will listen.

That's about all I can offer, I wish you well on your search.
