training at maximum effort is the single best way to increase the resting metabolic rate and the VO2Max. training at maximum effort causes the greatest increase in growth hormone secretion and testosterone output. this is why elite sprinters on average have the lowest percentage of body fat as compared to all other elite athletes.

you would do better training in intervals such as running a 100 or 200 yard sprint at maximum effort then walking the same distance then sprinting again, etc. until you have performed 10-15 sprints. the type of training combined with a low calorie diet comprised of whole foods is the quickest way to a very lean physique.

You'll be exhausted by the end of the 5 minutes and so won't get the benefit you would if you were to run (not 100%) for 30 minutes. It's counterproduct, since you won't be building stamina nor burning very much fat in 5 minutes.

Other than defeating the purpose of excersising, there is no long term harm in doing it.
