When is a kid too old to be Trick or Treating?

Update:

My boys are in 7th and 9th grades and are going with all their friends this year....in fact, I'm having a pizza party for about 20 kids before they leave. I figure as long as they have a costume, yell "trick or treat", dont trample on the little kids, remember to say "thank you" and dont swear too loudly...it's all good!! LOL I know kids that went last year as college freshman...why the heck not? Theyre broke and like candy too!!

When they stop doing it for the fun of getting scared, getting some candy, and put no effort into it.....

When the big kids go trick or treating wearing their regular clothes that they had on all day and just picked up a plastic bag from the kitchen .... OR they are only out there to take from smaller kids..... Its time to stop!

As long as the follow your rules of wearing a costume and being polite, they should be able to go. I hate when older kids don't dress up or aren't polite with the adults passing out candy.

  • I say 16 would be the limit with my kids but like you say as long as they are kind, dress up in a great costume, not just a pair of torn jeans and a tee-shirt and not steal the little kid's candy, it is all good!! happy halloween

Round here they do it well into their teens. I don't mind as long as they let the little kids at the treats first. Why should there be a cut off age - its just a bit of fun.

    Around 10/11.

After 12. Usually at that age they go to halloween parties in the neighborhood.

I never really care....if they have the nerve to ring the bell, I give them a handful! Besides, I think it's better to see them collecting candy than TPing or egging houses!

Never! I love how adults are dressing up and how there are adult treats like apple cider and mulled wine. What a wonderful way to interact, and meet, your neighbours.

Never...once a kid, always a kid. Scarey thought, Eh?
