partial fractions in maths?

why is the repeated bracket done differently to if it was just on its own??

It is done like this:

_A_ +_B_+_C_

(x+2) (x-4) (x-4)^2

why is that not done like this:

_A_+_B_+_C_

(x+2) (x-4) (x-4)

I know it doesn't work but why??

Update:

I suppose but why can't it be treated as if it was two separate brackets (x-4)(x-4). i suppose i see what you mean though

The LCD is (x+2)(x-4)^2. Therefore, you must have the term C/(x-4)^2
