How does the "plastic bag trick" work?
As most cashiers know, a credit card which is difficult for a card-reader to read can often be read if a plastic grocery bag is wrapped around the card before it is swiped through the machine. As a cashier, I'm curious (as are many of my customers) - what is the mechanism by which this works?

It cleans out the path that the credit card takes, and also dispels static that's built up.
