How much would you pay to have a light bulb replaced in your car?

£5, no more.

It's an easy job to do your self. Open the hood and locate the anchor slides (GM) cars or screws (Ford) and most off-shore cars and the whole headlight assembly slides out in your hands. The bulbs are held in the headlight assembly by 1/4 turn plastic round collars. Spin them counter clockwise and the light bulb socket is in your hand. Always handle the new bulb with a kleenex tissue in your hand. It's important not to get any human oil or grease on the outside of the glass surface. The element inside the bulb gets so hot it frys the oil and breaks the bulb.

Most auto parts stores has small packages of silicone grease. Carefully wipe it on the contact points of the bulbs to keep the contacts from oxidizing, turning green and causing the bulb and spring loaded contacts an electrical resistance.

It would cost you about 1/2 hr. of a mechanics time to do the job. I'm not sure of shop rates in your area.

Depends on the car. Some modern cars need half the front end dismantling to get at the bulbs! The VW Golf is notorious for being really difficult in this area. I once spent almost an hour changing a sidelight bulb on my Alfa, cos it was almost impossible to get at. Later, the dealer told me they usually remove the whole headlamp unit to do it! If you're unlucky, it might cost £50!

About £10 maximum, however if you have one of the modern cars which require the whole front end dismantled to replace the lamp then maybe £100. Probably the reason why so many new cars are seen with headlights not working.

My tail light was out on my solara and the oil change guy wanted to charge me 9.95 $ to replace them. The bulb, for two, was about 3 $. So I did it myself, took about 10 minutes.

But for a headlight ... if I had to pay, I wouldn't pay over 10 $ ...

they are easy to replace also.

It cost me only the price of the bulb at a Mercedes garage, mind you the bulb was nearly 9 pounds!

Nothing I can replace the bulbs myself,get them from a reputable motorfactors and you can do a DIY for no more than say......£3 odds that`s going on it being a 472

If you're a customer of your dealer and you buy the bulb from them they'll fit it for free, to keep your business. Having said that, I do it myself, as you say, except when a headlamp went while I was on my way somewhere and didn't want to get grubby.

i recently had a bulb replaced in my vw golf at the main dealer it only cost me the price of the bulb.96p

£3.50 for the bulb (plus VAT)

at the very least they'll charge you1/2 hour for labour, charged at maybe £35 per, so add about 18quid plus VAT

grand total about £26

that's if they only charge you for half an hour.

I'd pay nothing - I'd replace the bulb myself.
