    1. Home life: Divorce; new sibling; illness; financial problems, etc. (Use children's books that deal with these issues)

    2. Being delayed: If a child is behind, he or she may act out, or retreat. (Use school resources to identify difficulties, like counselors, testing, tutoring, to identify problems, and keep open communication with home)

    3. Conflicts with other kids: Sometimes these things can go on all year, really impacting the feel of your room. (Use children's books and character ed. ideas to help teach life lessons about getting along or at least being civil with one another; Communicate with home!)

    4. Separation anxiety: Some kids just aren't ready to leave mom. (Set kid up with a buddy to get him through toughest part of day--usually a.m.; communicate with home; give a special job to kid--changing the calendar, getting snack, etc.)

    5. Parents that aren't helpful with difficult child: It's hard when you're up against it with a kid AND his parent! (Know all the school resources available to you, know and understand what forms of discipline are effective AND supported by the administration.)

    give the child a safe haven and encouragement to be creative;

    nurture them emotionally;

    provide nutritious snacks/meals and teach about same;

    discuss alternatives for dispute resolution;

    keep in close touch with family members and encourage parental involvement
