How difficult it is to get into Yale University to study?

It's quite difficult. They get so many applications that they actually end up rejecting people who are perfectly qualified. So how do you set yourself apart, and get admitted to a school of this calibre?
- Perfect grades aren't necessarily required. Yes, your grades need to be quite strong, but you also need
- Very strong SAT scores. But again, if your SAT's a bit low, you may still get in if you
- Have something special going on, that sets you apart from the crowd and makes you an interesting candidate. For example, one friend, who had good grades and good SAT scores (but not perfect), got in because she's an extremely good figure skater. Another friend got in because he's a fabulous musician. So if you have a special talent, that can help
- But even if you don't have a super talent in any one area, you can still get in if you have passion for something and can talk about that, and have proven that passion through your past actions. Maybe, for example, you aren't an Olympic figure skater, but you love the sport, and do your best at it, and have done for a long time, volunteering with your club and etc, despite the fact that you know you'll never make it to an elite level. Or maybe you work in your family's dry cleaner, and have to balance that, plus caring for your siblings, plus your studies. Or maybe you're really into karate, or do volunteer work at your local hospital, or... I mean, there are a million possibilities. Things you can talk about, things that you can use to set yourself apart.
So yes, good grades and SAT scores are a must. But also, passion for something, which you've proven, and which you can talk about on the application, can certainly help.
And if your grades and SAT scores are good, it can also help if you've held paid employment. Fewer and fewer kids are applying to such schools with any sort of paid job on their resume, and admissions people tell me that this can help set someone off from the rest of the applicants.

So many factors are at play in the selection process that outcomes for most candidates in the pool are impossible to predict.
Between two and three hundred students in any year are so strong academically that their admission is scarcely ever in doubt. The great majority of students who are admitted, however, stand out from the rest because a lot of little things, when added up, tip the scale in their favor. The difference between a successful and an unsuccessful candidate at Yale is often painfully small.
The single most important document in the application is the high school transcript, which tells a great deal about a student's academic motivation and performance over time. Yale looks for students who have consistently taken a broad range of challenging courses in high school and done well in them. There are no score cutoffs for standardized tests: the median scores for admitted students on the verbal and mathematical portions of the SAT generally fall in the low-to-mid 700s, and the ACT composites in the low 30s, but successful candidates present a wide range of test results.
While there is no hard and fast rule, it is safe to say that performance in school is relatively more important than testing. A very strong performance in a demanding college preparatory program may compensate for modest standardized test scores, but it is unlikely that high standardized test scores will persuade the admissions committee to disregard an undistinguished secondary-school record.

I found out that Yale changed their GPA recently. The side below shows always the current GPA for all elite universities.
