Recent problem: WinXP on PC now ejects CD tray at intervals - any fixes, diagnosis?

Have an HP desktop with two optical drives and WinXP home SP2. In the last week or so, the first drive suddenly ejects and returns for no reason, several times a day. Happens whether using it or not. If not using , it has no effect. If reading CD or playing audio, it interrupts and gives an error that the data is not there, until I eject again and return disk. Any ideas? Is there a windows update that could have caused this?

    * The problem might be in the CD-ROM drive itself. May be the tray is not sitting well in its track, Have you tried opening the drive by inserting a straightened out paper clip and then closing the Drive? This will usually solve the problem.

    * Another problem could be that the one of the drive belts could be faulty, this sometimes makes the Drive behave erratically, first check for these issues before you go on towards anything else. The behavior could be triggered even if one of the microprocessors is over heating - in this case, you might have to go in for a new drive

    * On the software side - try and see if the drive behaves the same way in any other user account (if you have only one user account, try creating a new one and see if the problem persists)

    * Also Run a spyware and Virus scan, some spyware and virus programs are known to have such affects on CD/DVD drives

    * You can also try removing the drive via the device manager, right click on the drive and select remove, reboot computer in which case windows will detect a new hardware device. See if that fixes the issue
