Before taking the iPod back to the store consider restoring it via iTunes.

When iPod's come up with the "corrupt iPod software/firmware" warning in iTunes often the only solution is to "restore" the iPod - this can be done in iTunes. Just click on your iPod's icon on the top left in iTunes and in the screen that lets you check the boxes for "manually manage music" for your iPod there should be a button that says "Restore". This will completely reset your iPod to factory conditions and install the latest iPod software.

Unfortunately you will lose all your music and files on the iPod by doing this (i.e. it will format your iPod) but often this is the only option because somehow the "firmware" on the iPod (software that tells the iPod how to function) has become corrupted. This could be because the iPod was disconnected from a computer without using the "safely remove hardware" option in Windows or the "Eject iPod" option in iTunes.

If this doesn't work then the iPod may have a hardware fault where the hard drive isn't working properly - your warranty should cover this, as long as the problem wasn't caused by the iPod being dropped.

If it's the 5th generation ipod, you can try resetting it. You hold down the play and menu buttons both at the same time. Hold them down for 6-8 seconds. This should reset the ipod. Make sure your ipod is properly charged and plug it in again. If that doesn't work, ipods have an excellent warranty. It's one year. Take it in to your closest mac store and have them take a look at it. You can read more about it here
