Why Would Jesus Have to Die on the Cross?

why does anyone have to die for our sins when God, the All-Merciful, could as easily give us forgiveness if we ask for it? Isn't God the one who makes the rules? Why does He have to make someone suffer for our sins or for someone else's sins? Isn't that unjust of Him? According to the Bible the way to redemption could be obtained without the need for sacrifice. The Bible says:

Ezekiel 18:20 The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.

He did not and God did not require blood sacrifice to forgive sins, st. paul (a jew) had a plan to take revenge from whole europe by fooling them. This is one of the greatest conspiracy in the known history. Jews are really intelligent people.

The answer to your question is contained in the passage you quoted from Ezekiel. "The soul that sinneth, it shall die." Because we ALL sin, we ALL die. Ezekiel spoke out against a false use the people of his time were making of a doctrine of inherited guilt. The son does not inherit the guilt of his father. Nonetheless, the son is still sinful because it is not possible for anyone to be perfect. We all fall short. "There is no-one righteous, not even one; there is no-one who does good, not even one" (Psalm 14:1-3).

In Ezekiel's time, the basis of Israel's relationship with God and any hope of salvation lay in God's electing grace. God drew up a covenant with his people, but no matter how hard they tried, they could not keep it perfectly. Sacrifices of animals were made to atone for their failure to keep God's perfect law. Once a year, the High Priest entered the Holy Place in the temple with a blood sacrifice to make atonement for all the sins incurred by all the people of Israel (Leviticus 16). The crucial aspect of the whole system was the shedding of blood in the death of a substitutionary victim. When offered in obedient faith, without merit and with trust in God's mercy alone, the sacrifices were acceptable to God.

But it was never God's plan for this system to go on indefinately. That's why Jesus came to earth, the Messiah (which means God's anointed). It was his purpose to be obedient unto death in order to fulfill the original covenant drawn up between God and men. By laying his life down as an atoning sacrifice there was no longer any need to continue with the old covenant requirements of animal sacrifice. Jesus died ONCE, for ALL men. John the Baptist said of Jesus "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!" (John 1:29). Jesus was the substitutionary victim, the perfect sacrifice that bridges the gap between man and God.

God is not unjust. Far from it. But it does require humility, faith and trust to become obedient, even as Jesus was, and to accept that we are incapable of earning salvation. Yes, God will grant forgiveness if we earnestly repent and acknowledge that it is only through the atoning sacrifice of the shed blood of Jesus that we can even be heard.

The point is, we are ALL helpless because we are ALL sinners. And because God is so perfect, so holy, so just, so righteous, we cannot approach him on our own merits and plead for forgiveness. Jesus is the intermediary between us and God. Through his sacrifice, sinful humanity can be reconciled to God.

God can do anything...I agree. He allowed His Son Jesus Christ to suffer and die for US. So that WE could understand that sin something that should be avoided at all costs. Everything that God does...that so many find "unjust"...is simply God trying to show us How to return to Him, and to show US what happens when we don't follow the Path...we we stray from the safety of His light. WE needed the atonement...not God. WE needed to learn...not God. WE needed to understand not just how much pain sin can inflict...but to also know that we are loved so much that Jesus was willing..and God allowed...to die so that we could have the atonement in our lives. These are the acts of a merciful and loving God...not an unjust one.

BTW...Jesus volunteered knowing what He was going to have to suffer. He did it because HE loved us as well. That should bring one hope and humility if nothing else...to know that someone willingly laid down their life so you could live. So maybe instead of critizing...you should just say THANK YOU.

You are mistaken on a few points.

Arbitary forgiveness is not part of Gods character, although it seems Allah is recorded as allowing a murderer/bad man into paradise, and the righteous holy man went to hell- just to proove Allah is all powerful. The Bible says without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.

It would be unfair if anybody but God went to the cross. But He did it for us all.

Your Ezekiel quotes talk about generational guilt and not the spiritual result of sin. I am not answerable for my fathers sin. But I am for my own.

It would be unjust to simply forgive evil without demanding payment. There is a fundamental conflict between justice and mercy. That's why God instituted the Kinsman Redeemer law, which made it possible for a rich relative to pay the debt of a poor man. And THAT allowed Jesus to do the same for all of us.

It's all about atonement. It was the last covenant made between God and man, and fulfills the law. There was no need for another prophet to come along and reverse the covenant. Any "prophet" which tries to do so qualifies as one of the false prophets Jesus warned of.

Mark 14[24] And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many.

Luke 22[20] Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.

good question, but his sacrifice on the cross was a substitute for our own death... God's justice says that sin must be punished by death... The only way that our sins can be forgivin is if someone dies (us or Jesus)... he already died and he did it for everyone. And your quote doesn't show how redemtion can occur with out sacrifice. Hebrews 9:22 "without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness."

God has no sin, we are seperated from God through OUr Sin, Jesus Christ had to come as Mediator, to take our sins as a sacrifice, Jesus Christ is the lamb, they used to have to sacrifice lambs, without a spot that were clean, Jesus was clean, free from sin, resisted The Devils temptation, and the devil knew what was going to happen and tried, but Jesus went to the cross and beat the devil, and we can to when we believe and Have Jesus into our lives, Now the only thing the devil can do is deceive people into not believing and take them with him, WE need to know that We are saved through Jesus and our sins our washed in His blood.

This is just the way my mind works and my thoughts on this question, not trying to sway anyones opinions on this subject...

No one had to die for our sins... correct. I believe Jesus is the humanly form of God himself (father, son, and holy ghost equal ONE thing, the trinity.) Jesus was on earth, not so much as a savior, but more as a test to man(yes yes I believe jesus died for us and i will tell you why in a second.) He was testing the jewish people. God sat back and with out intervention let "man" do as he would to Jesus.

NOW When they say Jesus died on the cross for "our sins" I dont believe it was anything personal to your or me, but rather to "man" as a whole... to be human is to sin, and the sins of the human race killed jesus.

As far as your question "Why does he have to make someone suffer for our sins or for someone else's sins?" With anything you have to have 2 parts, the good and the bad, the alpha and the omega... I think that when bad things happen to good people, it is simply another "test" from god... not for the person that does evil things, but the good person that is on the recieving end of the evil... after all, he really wants to know who is truely worthy of eternal life, this life we are living means absolutly nothing... the true test is where our souls go AFTER this life. And if you were a king, wouldnt you want to test to see who is best of the best, the truest believers, before they came to live in your kingdom forever? Why would you want someone that is a liar and a theif to live there? That would ruin your whole kingdom.

Sin is in the blood. So only innocent blood from a willing person can remove it. A child is to young to be willing, so it had to be a grownup, and no grow-up was ever innocent till Jesus came. He did not have sin in his blood, so he could help others.
