Differences between regular stepped or non-stepped iron shafts?

Is it cosmetic only?

    Some would argue that the process for manufacturing rifled shafts is more precise than that used in stepped shafts. For all but the most advanced golfers, the difference is cosmetic.

    With the introduction of nano technology in golf it is now possible to create a graphite shaft where the carbon molecules are aligned in precise rings therefore producing a super light weight shaft that an has exact, repeatable swing thus eliminating the need for spine balancing. The Grafalloy Epic shaft is their most current shaft that applies that technology. They're about $170 to $180 each.
