Some very basic ways maths are used are in the building trades. Estimating square footage of odd shapes, heights and slopes of ground, for highways, any type of building that you may want to be structurally sound. All that kind of stuff. Developing a project from any of those could be interesting but you will want to pick something that interests you, or maybe a project your city already has approved, (a new highway?) one that maybe you could use some of the information. Those working on the project may not know they are applying maths and theorems to it, but you could show how they apply. Have fun with the project.

Estimate the height of buildings or trees using a protractor to sight the angle and pacing off the distance between the base of the building and your measuring point as one side of the triangle.

How about investigating the geometry of the great pyramids. That would help you understand these principles and how they were used.
