Does one need to "sterilize" one's fingers with the mulit-purpose solution before putting contact lenses in?

My husband insists that he needs to sterilize his fingers with the solution before he can handle his contact lenses. I can understand the need to have clean hands but is it really necessary to be so wasteful?

No. Actually you should just wash your hands thoughly with soap and rinse your fingers and the lenses with saline solution. You aren't sterilizing your fingers with the multipurpose solution, it doesn't kill fast enough

I have been wearing contacts for many years and you are right in saying he needs to make sure his hands are clean before handling his lenses, but there is absolutely no need to sterilise his fingers with the solution. The solution is purely for the lenses alone.
