Is America heading for disaster?
I see the present attitudes in America dominated by fear, hate, and distrust. It seems like we became so fearful after the attack on 9/11 that we are heading down a very dangerous path. The politics are full of fear and hate. Red and blue states. Who is moral and who is not. Judgmental of each other for every reason possible. Talking about peace and love are sneered at as unamerican and weak. How can this path lead to anything but destruction of all we stand for?

You are referring to the rampant division of the country along party lines.
Never before, except for perhaps during the Vietnam War, have we found it so easy to evoke negative emotions when we look at modern politics.
It will get better... I just don't know how long it will take. The first step towards renewal of American "brotherhood", if you will, is the Bush Administration leaving office in January of 2009.

People are frightened but rightfully so. My cousin worked in the WTC during the first and last bombing. She is young, college grad going to work like you and I do everyday. Beautiful morning. Said hello to friends she worked with for years. Sat down and then she saw blood, carnage, gore and death mostly from desperate falling people an hour later. For the rest of her life she'll live with that. Remembering her friends no longer there. It was just an ordinary day just like tomorrow or today on our shores in America
But the fact is its a different world and maybe distrust in your eyes has a different meaning for me. I want people to be observant and careful.
I still see the hope and love in the world because I have my faith so I don't think we are headed down some dangerous path. I still see people in my life happy and willing to help generously and love.
We're at war and it sucks but when push comes to shove most people red or blue come together. War has always done this to people as history reveals but we come through as Americans
Check out our history.. Our fore fathers and politics at that time. You'll find some interesting similarities. It was worse then by far but when you think about Jefferson, Adams etc is that what you remember?
We all want peace and love. But I wasn't really feeling it on 9/11. I guess I have a different perspective. Sitting back and letting things just take their course isn't realistic.
War in general is a necessary evil. History will be the judge just like it was after WWII.
Did Fear, Hate, and distrust distroy Great Britian during or after the bombings it endured in WWII? We will always be a civilized nation full of compassion.

Here lies the problem & I will probably get a lot of thumbs down but o' well.
The problem is that everyone that has an opionion thinks that their opinion is right. Anyone that has an opionion does not respect the opinion of someone who disagrees. It's a constant power struggle...that's the problem.
Ppl are afraid to and are unwilling to compromise.
Example: When Congress wanted to pass the schip President Bush said he would veto it. Instead of working to revise it Congress passed it anyway. Why? To prove a point? The only point they proved to me was that they waste time. Pres. Bush said he would increase the budget from 5 billion to 10 billion...but Congress wanted 35 billion. Congresses unwillingness to compromise speaks volumes over 'what's best for this country'. And so to this date nothing has been passed (as far as the Schip) way to go congress! Kept showing us you're right!
I don't undertand why we cannot get a candidate who says, "Let's compromise, let's leave abortion rights alone & in return we leave marriage to 1 man 1 woman"~~~THAT'S JUST AN EXAMPLE!!!!!! Of Libs getting 1 of what they want and Cons getting 1 of what they want.
I don't think Americans are 100% lib or 100% concervative, I know that there is a way to compromise...ppl just need to be willing to do it.

It is said civilizations do not die sudden death, but die slowly by its own mistakes. I understand your point: we have become hedonistic, lazy, superficial, narrowminded, "Rambo" mentality and quite also egomaniacs. Another flaw is our "self-righteous" attitude to push it on others and think we are "perfect". I have seen the same attitude, if not the same ways, among the ancient Romans right up to the imperialistic British, and no offense on today's British people. If we don't mend our ways we are on the road of possible decline and falling in the next two to five decades. Sad for a country that put a man on the moon some decades ago. Any wonder why Islamic insurgents don't respect us? Not me.
P.D.: Henry Thoreau and Walt Whitman would cover their faces with shame.

We are focused on petty issues, and not the issues that are most important to survival. It's a divide-and-conquer mentality.
While we (or congress) spend time calling each other names like "American hating" or "neo-con", we aren't paying attention to the fact that another catastrophe can and will happen anywhere.
Another Katrina will happen. Another Mag 7-8 will hit California. This is not fear mongering, it's accepting that we are still at the mercy of our own Hubris. We think we're untouchable, yet history tells us that this line of thinking will be our downfall.
And fighting instead of searching for peace will only breed more fighting. More wars. More death.

I see more fear in your propagandist question than in America after 9/11.
Who was afraid?
Name one true American that actually was scared of some radical terrorist that has no ability to fight like a man?
Please.
Peace and Love? We went through that in the 60's.
Where did it get us? A lot of people on drugs who were so delusional, that they couldn't defend themselves from their own shadow.
The enemy we face today is not gonna accept weakness of any kind. Why can't you Libs get that?
I don't like war any more than you do.
I don't hate anyone either. But, I am not gonna back down or be afraid to stand up for what I believe in and fight!
Our fore fathers are watching us. Do you think if they had been afraid to fight we would be here today?

Maybe if we had realized that there is something to fear, we could have taken care of the problem before 9/11 happened. Peace, love and understanding with no fear of anything is what catches people unguarded. It only works in fairy tales.
Source(s): PS: Do you realize 47% of California voted for Bush? That red state/blue state thing is only used by people who love to divide and stereotype people. - Anonymous1 decade ago
What do you expect in a culture where Humanism is taught in our schools.
As a person who has grown up in a Humanistic society let me answere your question with some more questions since there isn't a right question and everything is relative. Why should anyone love anyone including themselves since we are insignificant and only good for sex and money. What is there to love? what is love? Morality can't exist because no one is wrong everyone is right because there is no right or wrong... right? Whats the point of peace? What is it good for? In war I can steel my neighbors oil and supply myself. In peace I have to help others. Why should anyone help anybody. What do we stand for great American? What does American law and government stand on for its judgments or good or evil? I don't think it knows, its to busy stumbling on the question to if there is a right or wrong in a world without absolutes.......Sarcasim aside this nation and every rest of the Godless nations suck! In order to be peace you have to have God and its government has to abide in his commandments. It will take an amazing act of God to save this nation since its Amendments and the bill of rights have been shot to crap by our congress of dictators and the souless children of the ACLU.
America's well being Forcast: Tommarow... Anarchy a high of rape and murder and theft, possible child molestation will continue till later on in the day following the school shootings and prostitution. 60% chance of economical collapse. Later on in the week a 30% of Communism still no hope in sight more rape, blood sweat and tears and sure to follow nuclear apocolypse....
Source(s): What does America stand on for its government and law making? Social morals? And where do they get there information on what is moral or what isn't? - Anonymous1 decade ago
the jist of that quandry is religion. religion caused 9/11 along with the unrest that has existed in the world for ages.
religion is mythology.
until everyone can evolve out of the primitive intellect that believes fiction is real and realizes that no matter how much you pretend or 'have faith' that something is real that it will never make it real, then our world will continue along this same path of hatred, greed, distrust, and fighting wars in the name of gods who have never existed except in the imaginations of their creators and those who pretend or 'have faith' they exist.
