what do you think of drug use for spiritual purposes?

I mean psychedelic drugs like Cannabis, DMT, Mushrooms, LSD, Peyote and other such drugs. I do not mean narcotics and stimulants and depressants. Just the psychedelics.

Well, psychoactive drugs have been used since humans discovered them in prehistoric times. Many people still use them as part of religious rituals, and attribute the hallucinogenic effects as a way to enter the spirit world etc

There is even a theory that early Christians were heavy users of psychedelic mushrooms. One of the investigators of the Dead Sea Scrolls wrote a book on it.

I drugs being used as a spiritual tool is alright... so long as it's used as a spiritual tool. This means that you don't smoke some weed on your day off just to kick back and giggle and then call it a spiritual event. I think the claim should carry some merit by it's actions. And I'm also of the opinion that a Spiritual tool looses it's essence with over uses.

In other words, in an initiation, dedication, vision quest or some other religious marker I could see using a drug as an appropriate action. I would not approve of someone using it every week, with no "event" and calling it a "spiritual purpose". In fact... that would probably tick me off.

    But that's just my OP.
