Is accessible, radio-friendly music really a good thing?

I sometimes hear people criticizing some of the more experimental, unconventional bands and artists out there for not being accessible enough to listeners, or not being radio-friendly enough. Is that really such a bad thing? There's a good reason that new Nickelback album is so catchy...you've heard it all before, the exact same crap released countless times by different artists in different packaging. Every Nickelback/MCR/FOB/Britney Spears/50 Cent/Beyonce/Avril Lavigne/Fergie/Kanye West/Shakira etc. album ever recorded has been a complete waste of time. You will find absolutely nothing new, nothing the slightest bit innovative in any of them. If you already know exactly where an artist is going to go with an entire album before it's released, then what is the point? Am I wrong here?

Update:

Seriously, Heidi? "Hips don't lie"? Seriously? Nope, not a real musician. Real musicians tend not to rely upon near-nude self portraits on the cover of every cd to sell albums. Sorry, but she's pretty much a glorified hooker.

Hey now, you're gonna need to quiet down. You even admitted that these songs are catchy. All you have to do is close your eyes and try to mumble the words when the songs come on. Don't listen to the lyrics. Just trust us: they're really very deep. Just pick a song that has a couple words that sound like they might have something to do with memories or love or something, and vote for it as your class song. Fake it 'til you make it! It'll work out. Your classmates would correct you if it didn't really make sense in context, right? I mean, we're not all mindless drones here, right? Also, don't try to learn anything about music... at all. You're just going to have to trust us on that too... Nickelback is implementing a very difficult and complex style of music. No, you did not just hear them use the same tune on two songs; it's your imagination. Just listen to the feeling in his voice and rest assured that he's a deep intellectual. You need to stop thinking so much about things. You'll confuse your peers. Just watch your friends and do what they do, alright? Now, run along back to your cage: America's Got the Next Top Dancing Idol is about to come on.

  • You're exactly right. While bands that push the envelope and try to do different things (Tool, Radiohead, Primus, Mindless Self Indulgence) might not sell as many records as Nickelback, some of them still get airplay and they all have had steady sales and a loyal fan base. So making music that isn't radio-friendly isn't bad, since many of those bands still have a ton of loyal fans who go to their concerts and buy their albums. Radio-friendly music gets boring, and I believe most of the bands that keep making this kind of music will decline in popularity faster than a band that stays original.

I pretty much agree, except for one thing: have you actually listened to "every Shakira album ever recorded?" Or have you just heard her hit singles in English? The woman has been around for over a decade, she has 11 albums total, and she wrote all of them. She's amazing. She doesn't repeatedly sell out huge arenas worldwide because her music is "catchy" ... it's because she's actually good.
