Up until the late pre-dynastic era Egypt was divided into upper and Lower Egypt. Each had a separate system of government and it is even thought they spoke different languages.

At this time the capitol of Upper Egypt was known a Nekhen while the capitol of Lower Egypt was Nekheb later called Heiroconopolis (the falcon city).

After many years of warfare it was the warrior-king Menes (c3000BCE) whose armies finally defeated the armies of the southern nomes or city states, that are collectively known to us as Upper Egypt.

After the process of unification Menes took on the name of Pharaoh Narmerwith the throne name of Horus Aha and built a new capitol city called White Walls or Merenptah.

This was later renamed Memphis by the Greeks.

This is really the end of the Naqqada civilisation and the beginning of the period known as The Early Dynastic Period or Dynasty 0 of the history of Egypt.

It is from this era that we have the first instances of hieroglyphic writing emerge. .

Narmer is known to history through the finding of the The Narmer Palette and his extensive burial site at Abydos.

It is after this time that Abydos became the ritual burial site of the Egyptian Pharaohs.

Menes unified Upper and Lower Egypt (some Egyptologists associate him with the protodynastic king Narmer).

About 5200 years ago King Narmer who was from the south fought against the northern people, with his victory over them he unified the 2 kingdoms, he wore the double crown made of the 2 crowns and made himself Pharaoh. He built his capital between the north and the south at Memphis, by this the 2 parts of Egypt were happy and he could control both of them.
