A pitt is NOT like other breeds, you need to define your role as Alpha VERY clearly from the beginning.

    1. Go through doors and passage ways before your dog.

Rite of passage is important to dogs, and the alpha has the right first.

    2. Eat first--then feed your dog.

    3. If your dog is blocking your path, make him move out of your way--do not go around or step over him. Sub-ordinate animals move for the alpha.

    4. Call your dog to you for petting and attention. Don't go to him. Use Call Name only when good. When bad just say" Bad Dog Bad Puppy" And reward him. Motivation and Reward. We all need a good reason to do things well. Praise Praise and LOVE

    5. When coming home,if your dog does not come to greet you, ignore him. If you go running to your dog then, you are treating him as the ALPHA.

6.When you play with your dog, be sure that you end up with possession of the toy, and then put it up.

    7. Don't allow your dog to sleep on the bed with you. At best you are making him equal with you. (Of course, we all let up on this one after our alphaness is firmly established.)

    8. Practice trust/dominance exercises. Gently put your dog down on his side or back and touch his ears, paws, etc. and give him a massage to make it all pleasant for him. Offer treats if he doesn't want his paws touched while you are touching his paws. (This helps later when you have to trim the toe nails.)

    9. Be your dogs leader. Prove to him that he can trust you in all situations, and that you will provide for his every need. Be consistent in enforcing all rules of the house. Establish regular routines that he can depend on.

    10. Practice "doggy" discipline, that is when your dog engages in undesirable behavior, discipline him in a way that he understands. Give him a scruff shake and a grunt or growl. You must catch him in the act for discipline to be effective, however, or he won't understand for what he is being corrected.

    11. Practice taking objects from him, toys, food, etc. Start by trading the object for a yummy treat. Then give back the object back to him. Get him used to your hands around his food bowl. Start by adding yummy treats while he is eating. Work up to removing his food bowl while eating to add the treats, then replacing the bowl for him to resume eating. You can eventually work up to actually slipping your hand in to remove food while he is eating.

    12. Chewing - Puppies cannot help chewing, they teeth just like all babies. This can be most annoying and become a habit that is hard to break. When puppy is small and starts to nip and bit ( take his open mouth and hold it gently shut with your hand , like an alligator mouth, and say NO in a firm regular voice. Every time puppy does this. Then from the beginning puppy will know, OPEN MOUTH BITING AND CHEWING IS NO. It also helps to get baby teething rings and old socks etc, put them in the freezer, when frozen give them to puppy to chew to sooth the gums.

13.It helps to keep dogs on a Harness plus collar for Tags and identification. Animals attack at the throat and jugular vein. So to tug or try to train a dog by yanking on his neck, sends an ALARM signal of DANGER to him. Thus he balks. By keeping a standard harness from pet shop, it hooks to his back and feels comfortable and he is much easier to control and teach. But Try leash training first.

14: Most important when beginning training. Teach the puppy his NAME: use the CALL name FIRST.

15: Do not expect too much from your puppy.Remember we all learn at our own pace and in a step by step lesson.

Just like teaching your child or a friend. Slow and patience.

i have a 7 month american pitbull terrier mix i had him sice he was 6 weeks old. They go through stages, like any other breed. I crate trained him let me tell you it helped out ALOT. i dont know what ur puppies doing so here are somethings i did.. when i caught my puppy in the act of going potty inside I would clap my hands, NO and outside he went. No Attention i leave him out there for a few seconds let him cry at the door, then i would walk over to the grass where i want him to go,and when he went i praised him. Your teaching him no attention for pottying inside. Now for the chewing i use to put him in his crate with some toys, while i clean the house or whatever. They also have this spray called Grannicks bitter apple spray for the chewing stage. I really think ignoring the bad behavior works the best. They will learn that what ever they are doing they dont get attention. Pitbulls are attention getters, so take away the attention when bad..Wish you luck!

What do you mean by "discipline"? If you mean getting physical, and forcing the dog to "be submissive", you want to forget that. Following the teachings of great trainers such as Karen Pryor and Bob Bailey will show you : the only punishment that a dog will understand is the withholding of the reward. Is your puppy jumping up to greet you? Turn right around when he does this. Remove that reinforcer (interaction with you) and the behavior will stop.

Is your puppy biting? Get up and leave as soon as you feel teeth on skin. You don't need to scold or strike your dog. When you end the game abruptly when he bites, you teach the dog clearly and kindly that teeth on skin = game over.

This is not "babying" your dog, nor is it treating him "like a person". This is the scientific, proven way to teach your dog. Here's more information:

Yeah, just like any other breed of dog.. BUT YOU DO NOT HIT THEM.. NO flyswatter, no newspaper, no nothing.. No flicking, pinching, kicking punching.. None of the abusive suggestions you will likely get..

You do not discipline, you correct inappropriate behaviour. You do not discipline a dog for something you do not catch them doing.. You should sign up for some classes and learn how to properly train and correct your dog. If you take the advice from these people who beat their dogs, you are going to end up in a whole heap of trouble when that dog grows up.

Hitting doesn't necessarily work on puppies. It just makes them fearful of either YOU or the thing you're hitting them with or both. Which doesn't teach them anything. Using positive reinforcement and a stern vocal 'no' when they've done something bad while THEY ARE IN THE ACT of being naughty - not after. If it's after - you're too late. I really really recommend taking your puppy to obedience classes. It teaches YOU how to teach your dog to listen to your commands. It's fun and allows your puppy to socialize with other dogs. Read books on training to. Do those two things and work with your puppy everyday and you'll almost be an expert!

Pits are fantastic dogs. If you have been a responsible owner they will be fine. Make sure they are not left unsupervised with the babies and all will be okay.

You don't "discipline" any puppy by hitting it with anything. It depends on the behavior you wish to stop. Basically with puppies positive reinforcement is best, if you post more details I may have a more helpful answer. I find that "time outs" work with my dog (mixed breed), when he does something I don't like he has to sit and stay until he settles and focuses.

BTW: When I say "something I don't like" it means something he isn't supposed to do, IE, lunging at a blowing leaf while walking, barking at barking dogs or jumping on people.

By setting boundaries, having clear rules, rewarding them when they behave, and redirecting when they do something wrong. There is no reason to use physical punishment on any dog, let alone a Pit Bull. This is one breed that actually wants to please its owners - let the dog know when you are pleased and he will keep doing what he has to to make you happy.

you have to train them like all other pups to listen and obey or you will have a un rulely pet. tuging the ear or neck and saying no firmly when they are misbehaving is a start. repeating over and over no and if he is growling and biteing a tap on the nose and again no. keep working with him until he starts to listen.make sure he goes out right after eating and praise him with treats and a good petting when he does his out door job and listens to you. beating a dog will only confuse and scare him, then they will not remember what they were hit for later.so love and patience will always win in the end.
