If you tell him in advance he will think about it the entire evening and the experience will be a very quick one.

I think it would be less awkward if you didn't say anything and just naturally started doing it. I assume you two are not very experienced so that might be the best way.

My wife will do things like not wear underwear and tell me at dinner, play with herself on the way home, or get oral on me while going home. these are good indicators i might want to floor it and get home.

well that depends on what you mean by suprise,..sex? your pregnant? first i would enjoy the first day and wait til its in the late evening over a romantic dinner or a nice quite place, including your bedroom..and give him adoring looks and cuddle with him...start giving him soft gentle massages...then start tellign him how you love him and try going down memory lane or relive your childhood memories together and just get a vibe going of relaxation and a little sense of laughter..then tell him or give him what it is approach it gently and romaticly...

Don't tell him anything. It's supposed to be a surprise. Just do it (boldly) when the time is right.
