I believe rare breeds demand high prices. This is where a customer cannot shop around. The only choice is going on a puppy waiting list and/or traveling hundreds of miles to get one. I would think that these dogs would be on the top of the list. As most of them are not recognize by a national organization like the AKC then naming them as an answer is controversial. BUT STILL - people are paying an outrageous amount of money for some of the new poodle mixes. The price tags are in the thousands.
It is not uncommon for some pre-trained hunting or German Sheppard to be sold a high price, but as the basic dog does not, then this as an answer is also controversial.
There are still some recognize breeds that come in short supply. I do not know all of them. I have talked to owners of Prince Charles who have paid over $4,000.00. I think this is a lot of money for a dog. Another good example but not at that price range are some terriers like Australian, Border, Norfolk, and Norwich.

Price is subjective to supply and demand.
If Area A has only one or two breeders that sell Boxers then they will be more expensive than the Boxers sold in Area B where there are 10 or 12 breeders.
Hope that makes sense.

I have to agree with the previous answer regarding supply and demand. In my area, I have seen people asking a lot of money for the (designer)mix breeds.

English Bull dogs can top out at $2,500 a pup.
Rare Breeds and imports are up there too.. for instance, you want a South African Boerboel... you will be paying about $1800 or so...

I agree with Hillary also. The English Bulldog can be anywhere from $2,000 - $3,000. Also, the really rare breeds are pricy.
