I have a 15 year old whirlpool washer that is having some problems?

Below is the part that is defective.

It is an easy fix:

coupling replacement:

unplug machine.

the outer portion of this washer

can be removed from the inner

workings by flipping up the

control panel and popping

the 2 rear quick clips

and unpluging the lid switch.

once the case is removed,

the tub,motor and pump

assembly will be easily accessible.

to get to the broken coupling

remove the pump first then

the motor,both are held

together with quick clips.

line up the part and replace

the motor, pump, and

case in reverse order.

This is the job of an Appliance Tech, not a Plumber. Could be the "dogs" in the agitator that have worn out. These look like fingers that engage the agitator. Could also be a broken belt.

if you can freely turn the agitator in both dicertions, the it is the "Dogs" just pop open the top of the agitator and look down when you turn it, if you can see them come out, but they don't grab the sides, then thats it. They are only about $4 at an appliance part store.

There is a clutch at the bottom of the drum that connects the unit to the motor, if that clutch is gone out then it would be more cost efficient to buy you a new one.

The cost to get a plumber out to look and see if that is the case would not be worth it.

A quick test, if you can hold the drum still while the unit is running then the clutch is gone. you should not be able to hold the drum still at all.

May be the transmission. If so it would be better to purchase a new unit.

Check around--some private label brands are manufactured by the big name brands.

15 years old... Time to get a newer model, it will run better and will be more cost efficient, Good luck
