My father-in-law is a professional painter and he used ONLY plain old masking tape if he must tape off an area.. Although, he's so GOOD that he generally doesn't use it much.. good luck

Painter's tape is a type of masking tape. The difference is that painter's tape can stay on longer (up to 14 days) and supposedly leaves no adhesive and does not damage woodwork, etc. Either will work. Painter's tape is just a little improved over the original. See website:

Masking tape is a good, general-purpose tape. It's been around for decades. Painter's tape (blue and now, green) was developed because masking tape tended to let thin paints bleed through, creating rough edges. The other advantage of painter's tape is that the adhesive isn't as tacky, so it will be less likely to lift the finish underneath. If you want peace of mind, I suggest you exchange the masking tape for painter's tape.

Painters tape was developed to minimize the damage done to the surface when it is removed. particularly on new paint, old masking tape will mar the surface when it is removed. if the surface you are taping is older and cured masking tape would work however do not leave it in place for too long (for new paint to dry )or it will pull up the new paint when removed.

NO! Masking tape, if it is old, will come off in little pieces and will take you FOREVER to get off. And if it's not old, it might pull off whatever it's attached to. I know the blue paint is more expensive, but it's much easier to work with. Masking tape is a pain in the neck!!!!

Yes, but it is stickier and harder to remove if you apply it tightly. I use it every time I paint, I barely stick the edge close to the painting job & not stick the entire width. If you are fearful of tape removing paint that it is stuck on, stick & remove (repeat a few times) onto your jeans, etc.. to reduce the stickines (by adding some fibers/gunk onto tape); it won't stick quick so hard. Remove slowly & same direction it is on wall, or whatever.
