Christmas has become so commercialised that it has lost any real significance other than a selling and buying spree.

In England, some garden centres have put their Christmas goods on display in September and are swarming with customers who want to be the early birds! Card shops use the fact that surface mail takes a long time to start selling Christmas cards in August!

Halloween has grown out of proportion too, with all sorts of new goods coming out every year to tempt the punters, and what used to be a simple dress up occasion using ingenuity has become another large source of income for manufacturers.

The "post early" advice has now caught on to the extent that the first Christmas card dropped into our letter box on the 30th October. For heaven's sake, what are people thinking about? It is not a competition as to who will have been the first to wish you the compliments of the season. What pleasure is there in receiving a card two months early?

Not only that but the amount of rubbish and hideous or useless things that are produced and sold for such occasions is increasing yearly. It is scandalous.

Manufacturers jump on any bandwagon to make money. Soon we will be celebrating every country's national day, every foreign custom, every saint's day, all for the sake of putting money in the pockets of some smart trading company.

The only consolation is that some people are starting to see sense and act accordingly.

That would be me. I wish that stores could at least wait until after Thanksgiving to start their commercial propaganda for Christmas. Seeing the trees and the decorations does give me a warm, fuzzy feeling, though.
