Let's assume for a moment purgatory exists?
If it does exist wouldn't the change. The cleansing of our sins have to take place in a moment? In the twinkling of an eye? Read the verses below. Surely those who are changed at the last trump from corruptible to incorruptible. From mortal to immortality are not then going to be sent to purgatory.
1Corinthians 15:52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
1Co 15:53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
1Co 15:54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.

I'd think it would almost have to be instantaneous, from our linear-minded perspective anyway -- locked in, as we are, to measured time. "Time" stops for each of us at death, though. And time itself will stop when that trumpet sounds. I sometimes think (and this is only a personal take on it, not "official" teaching) that the Church puts purgation in terms of "doing time" so that we can understand its purpose. As it is, Scripture gives us only glimpses of what lies beyond death; we "see through a glass darkly". But we also know that Jesus Christ is the same "yesterday, today, and forever" because God is omnipresent -- all time is "now" to Him. At that trumpet, though, purgatory will likely cease to exist; there will be no further need for it, as we will all be either with God or ... not.

In my opinion, there are three heavens. Purgatory could either mean any or both of the first two. Possessed by the Spirit, it is possible for Paul or any of the writers to see Earthly time from the viewpoint of eternity.

Purgatory is simply the place where already saved souls are cleansed of the temporal effects of sin before they are allowed to see the holy face of Almighty God.
Revelation 21:27 tells us that "...nothing unclean will enter [Heaven]."

It doesn't speak of purgatory anywhere that I can see.
If purgatory truly exists, then I would have a problem understanding a few things. Like, why did Christ have to die, when eventually we would get out of purgatory, if there were anything we could do to be saved, why purgatory, why'd Christ die?

I'm sorry, I cannot even begin to assume that purgator exists. Doing so completely negates what my Lord Jesus Christ did for me. I cannot allow myself to think it even possible.

We cannot apply human definitions of time measurement to the hereafter. It just does not work that way.
