Dry skin on a lab...... my black lab has such dry skin that he constantly scratches and is now creating sores.
Is there a vitamin or ointment or something I can do for him. The vet told me to use oatmeal shampoo but after 2 months, it is not working for him. At this moment in time, I can not afford to take him to the vet for dry skin. Any advice?

Sometimes the really itchy/dry skin is caused by food allergies. If nothing else is working I would try switching his food to something else.

when is the last time he has been groomed?? even calling a groomer and setting up a bath and brush servce will help ask for a hydrating shampoo and conditioner. Your dog will feel and look better!!! :) It shouldnt cost more than 25 dollars for a lab !! If this doesnt work ask groomer or pet store associate to help you find a reasonable priced new food that helps with dry skin.

Buy an ESPREE conditioner. That is the best to maintain the skin and coat. ANYTHING ESPREE works great! You will not find a better quality conditioner for dogs! The other bands contain too many chemicals that could be making your dogs skin even worse!....Give it a try!! I use this on my dogs and it works wonders! The link below shows the different conditioners from ESPREE! Again, give it a TRY it sure will beat another trip to the vet!!

Make sure he has a capsule of cod liver oil with every meal, also give him a raw egg regularly, this is very good for conditioning the coat, give it time to work so don't stop after a few days, keep it up for at least six weeks and you should see the difference.Ask the Vet to check him for scabies and mites.

Check out this site. It has a lot of good information for you. You can also find a lot of products that you can use on your lab like soaps and cremes. Good luck.
