Pool care - someone suggested saline?

I just bought a house with a pool, and I've never had to take care of a pool before. Someone suggested that saline is an environmentally friendly alternative to chlorine. Does anyone have any experience with saline?

I have a Salt pool and I don't know where the person got 500 to convert, but nothing is that cheap. What they were telling you is correct; however, what you will need to do is call a pool co and have an estimate for converting your pool filter system to a salt generator the generation system itself is roughly 2500.00 (one time cost) and then 500 each yr for the first Salt fillup. Since your pool is already chlorine, I have no idea what they would bill you to actually convert the system. I can tell you it is absolutely FANTASTIC. I am lousy with chemicals and can tell you 100% how wonderful a salt pool is, worth every penny. The salt generator generates it's own chlorine which is not the same as the chemical chlorine normally dumped in pools so there is no smell, no itching burning skin or eyes. Your skin is soft, your pool is always crystal clear and I'm telling you it is so maintenance free that people who see my pool are amazed. I'm the laziest pool owner around and when I take a water sample up to my pool co and they say "you need more chlorine" I walk back to the little box and I turn a knob that goes say exam: 25% and I move the knob to 30% and I'm done, that's my maintenance for the month haha dead serious. Oh there is one other thing you can do if you want which is a kit of liquids which are enzymes all natural biodegradable one time a month 20 bucks to dump in which get rid of soap scum etc. that works with salt pools. that's it. It is the WAY TO GO!

Don't let anyone also talk you into a "Ozonator" that is what alot of pool cos have as their version of no chemicals or little chemicals. It's a ultra violet light system, yes it does filter, but it breaks constantly, we had one on our spa and our friends have them on their pools and they are broke constantly. They are so sorry they didn't get the salt generator. Once the salt generator is installed you just have to do the initial 500 gallons of salt every spring and the salt is like table salt you do get a slight taste of salt in the water.

If you have never had to take care of a pool before and until you get your salt generator or may not, you better call a pool co and perhaps get a maintenance plan worked out at least for the first yr and watch them while they do it. That would be a good start. Good Luck. If you are in the Maryland area I can suggest Laurel Pools in Libertytown Maryland. Small Pool co and very good.

Saline is salt water. Your pool has to be set up for salt in order for you to use it, otherwise you are going to ruin the filters and stuff.

It only costs about $500 to convert from chlorine to salt. (That was quoted, in writing, from our pool builder in July)
