Do i need a new transmission?

I have a 94 mazda 626 with a manual transmission. It will not physically shift into reverse and also 5 gear has a wining noise. Also it pops out of 3rd gear at high rpms. do i need a whole new transmission?

Base on you description, I don't think you need to replace a whole transmission. It can be rebuilt with a few inexpensive parts. You need to disassemble the trans and if the clutch components are old, I would replace them at the same time.

A lot of auto shops will tell you you need a new one without even looking. I had a ford Ranger at one time which had similar problems, and while looking in the engine compartment I noticed some loose bolts. They were the bolts which hold the tranny to the engine. After enlisting the help of a friend we tightened all the bolts that mounted the tranny, and the problem was solved.

Another possible cause is the linkages which go from the tranny to the shift lever may be loose or in need of adjustment.

My Mazda 323 had a grind noise going into third gear, and would pop out of fourth the whole time I had it. It would not go into second gear if I had just taken it out of a higher gear no matter what. It got stuck in 5th gear multiple times, and I had to take off from a dead stop in 5th gear, and get it up to 45-50mph before I could get it out of 5th gear. I never found the cause, but the car lasted me 2 years like that, and I ended up getting rid of it when the brakes went out. Who knows how much longer it would have lasted...I wasn't going to put money into it. What I am saying is that if it is the transmission, then it may very well last years acting up like that. Always remember though that it could go completely out tomorrow.

usually the gears are poping out, that is because the syncronizator is bad and dont hold the gear and then pop out, so there you have to fix your trans for the rest of the problems they could be solved by changing the clutch

but by the way you have to fix your trans also replace the clutch so..... take your car to a good trans shop and get a good advice before do anything

Check for loose bolts (like those that hold the shifter linkage in place).

It could be the shifter linkage, and most likely is. I don't know if this model has cables or what. But the cables do stretch.

But first check the bolts (both on the transmission and on the tunnel end).

My sister has a 97 Toyota Camry and her car would not reverse. She needed a transmission.

My car, a 01 Saturn, would make wining noises, my clutch had to get replaced.

I would guess that your clutch is gone or going out. You will never know unless you get it checked out. No matter how many people answer this question.
