Besides being a diebetic, what would cause protien to be in the unrine? Is it serious?

The doctor has ordered a 24hour unrine test for the lab. But I would like to know what it means to have protien in the urine and what would cause it. Thanks for your answers.

My husband is a diabetic, with high blood pressure. He had the same problem with protein in his urine. His was caused from his kidneys not filtering properly. He has 3rd stage renal failure, which 5th stage is complete renal failure. He also took the 24 hour urine test.

I am not saying that this is your problem, but it is very similar to my husband. This is how they discovered my husband's, through blood work and urine test.

His Nephrologist took him completely off of salt, because his kidneys could not filter it. He also took him off bananas, prunes, peanut butter....etc, because these are full of protein and potassium, which his kidneys also could not filter. My husband was referred to a registered dietitian who put him on a very good diet that has helped him tremendously.

My husband also was found with anemia, because the kidneys produce red blood cells, and when the kidneys are malfunctioning, the red blood cells go done.

To answer your question can this be serious? Yes, it can be very serious. In my husband's case it was. Yours may or may not be as serious, but it is a good thing that you are having it checked out.

I sure hope this will help you. I really wish you the best of luck.

    Have a blessed day!

Some protein leaks out normally, in small amounts. There are all sorts of things than can cause excess protein to show up in urine. The most common thing is kidney disease, but it also commonly occurs due to infections. Liver problems and blood disorders can also cause proteins to leak - there's a whole bunch of other causes as well. The type of protein in the urine points to the type of problem.

It is diabetic and the only other reason is a metabolic break down, which means your body is not processing things well, if you have lost a lot of weight recently for no apparent reason then it could be cancer.
