Well, where do I began?
Her husband cheated on her even before they got married.
The royal family, treated her like an outcast.
She tried to committ suicide over 2x, I think.
She suffered from bullemia.
The royals have to do something, because the public supports them financially.
She really began her true humanitarian efforts when she got divorced from charles. I think it helped her, help herself. Also, when she got treated for her eating disorder, she started addressing the seriousness of it, as well as other things like aids.
I think, since she must have been treated rather cruel by the royal family and was stripped of Her Title, going out into the public and doing charity work, helped her get the attention she wasn't getting at home. The victims of landmines and aids for example, accepted her the way she wanted to be accepted. Also, I think it made her heal her own self inside.
Touching seems to be taboo in the royal family, but Diana changed all that in her charity work.
Maybe she had a vengeance?
But mainly, since she was royal and born into money also, she had to find something to do, and charity must have fit the bill. It also is good for the reputation of the royals.
The royals are basically servants to the people.

As with most royalty they have nothing to do so the royals in England decided it would be good if she jumped into the fray.
