What vaccinatios to get for Asia?

Hi,

I am going to Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and India travelling for a year - does anyone know what injections I need for each country? (please include malaria even though its not an injection!)

Thanks

Not to be flip, but if you visit each country's Tourism website, you can get clear information on which propylaxis you may need for each destination.

One tip: in India and Thailand, stick with bottled water - it's inexpensive and plentiful. Otherwise, eat and drink well! Have Fun!

I went to all those countries except Indonesia less than a year ago and spent a fortune on vaccinations... For sure get hepatitis A & B shots! I got the rabies shots but I wouldn't recommend them... they cost an arm and a leg and they're completely optional. Even malaria medication wasn't needed in most spots. Every traveller I talked to about malaria meds said they didn't take them and that their doctor didn't recommend them (most were from the U.K., so they may have a different policty than N. America). If you talk to the locals/other travellers, you find out the malaria hotspots and stay away from them. Also, wear bug spray. Get a tetanus booster and pills for typhoid. If you're going to be in rural areas, you may also want to consider Japanese Encephalitis shots.

Talk with a travel doctor if possible, and a regular physician if that's all you can find. Also, the Lonely Planet guidebooks contain good-sized health chapters with all sorts of information, including vaccine reccomendations. I've traveled quite a bit in Asia, and got shots for various strains of hepatitis, meningitis, typhoid. Be sure to get your shots a few weeks prior to departure, as it takes time for your immunity to kick in. As for malaria, I opted not to take malaria pills. They can have some pretty serious side effects (yeast infections, mental problems, etc) and they aren't always neccasery unless you will be out in the woods a lot or in a particularly affected area. That said, you will need to wear bug spray with DEET to keep yourself safe from bug bites. I would also reccomended washing your feet and ankles with soap and water in the evening. It cleanses them of their pungent smell (which attracts bugs) and will help you avoid being bitten- I got this tip from a fellow traveler, and it really helped me out. Also, avoid perfumes, scented lotions, etc., as they attract mosquitos.

You don't need any injection, if you stay clean. Just get food and drinks from a clean and good supplyer. Don't eat from dirty roadside stall.
