Atonement is the reconciliation of the spiritual relationship between God and His creation, mankind, repairing the broken spiritual bond through the fall of Adam, but fulfilled by the redemptive power of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Thank you Jesus for your shed blood!

Atonement is generally defined as establishing ONEment, meaning "be in harmony".
Atonement is specifically an act of making amends for sin, making up for wrongdoing, or paying for a crime.
Christian "Atonement" is the reconciliation of God and man through the sufferings and death of our Saviour, for OUR sins!!!

Justification has been merited for us by the Passion of Christ who offered himself on the cross as a living victim, holy and pleasing to God, and whose blood has become the instrument of atonement for the sins of all men. Justification is conferred in Baptism, the sacrament of faith. It conforms us to the righteousness of God, who makes us inwardly just by the power of his mercy. Its purpose is the glory of God and of Christ, and the gift of eternal life:

before you say its a silly answer think about what toner does for your skin. it removes things that should not be there and conditions the surface. same for atonement.
