Nasty nasty?

I live in france. In 2002 I helped my ex partner (not wife ever) to rent a house. I signed a 3 year lease with her and paid a 3 month deposit.

When the lease was renewed it was done without reference to me. I was not invited to renew, nor did I ask for it.

Now, in 2007 I find she has been evicted for non payment of rent.

The local justice says Im responsible for the unpaid rent. Can this really be the case?

Yeah, what he said. Most leases have a clause that states if a new lease is not signed, the old lease renews on a month to month basis. If your ex-whatever did not sign a new lease, then you're still on the original. Now if she did sign a new lease, the new lease has your name on it and you didn't sign it then you've got a case. Ask the landlord to produce a copy of the most recent lease. Good luck.

Yes only if your name is still on the lease.

You said it was renewed, that implies that your name is on it.
