Should illegal immigrants be given drivers licenses and health benefits?

Well... the consensus seems to be against...

I agree with the vote thus far.

For those who would disagree, I would ask one simple question... Why?

In every state in the United States, every US bank, accepts a drivers license as proof of legal residence. Even the Federal Government I-9 allows a drivers license as partial proof of citizenship. Giving drivers licenses to illegals would seem to invalidate those policies. Would you force citizens to carry passports to travel from state to state?

There are US citizens who cannot get health benefits. Why not give benefits to US citizens to our citizens rather than to criminals?

People complain about the money being spent elsewhere. They complain about the money being siphoned off to third-world countries so business can save a few bucks. They complain about the money being spent in Iraq. I will agree the first is totally wasted and represents a total drain on our economy.

However, with respect to the money being spent in Iraq, at least that money has accomplished a few things. It has rid a country of a terrorist dictator. It has allowed them to have a voice in their government. It has assisted them in developing a military that will be able to defend themselves... so our troops may return home. It has confirmed the now-expressed (after the fact) suspicions of a few that perhaps Hussein didn't have the WMD the rest of the world was convinced he had. And, while the terrorists have been kept busy elsewhere, it might be noticed how seldom we have seen a major terrorist attack in the US in some time.

Yet some contend that we assist people who have knowingly and intentionally broken our laws. I'm sorry for my ignorance, but I am unable to see the sense in that. Most of the money paid to these criminals (and they are criminals in every sense of the word... motive, means, opportunity... and the fact that they're breathing air in this country proves their guilt) is sent out of the country. Circumvent our tax law by demanding pay in cash... unreported. They therefore are illegally avoiding income tax. They also feel entitled for social services paid for by tax-paying citizens to help our own citizens. They put their children in our schools... also paid for with our taxes for our children. The don't force their kids to learn English--rather they expect us to learn Spanish. Again, WHY?

US citizens claim to be forced into lives of crime because of ignorance, poverty, or by design. Yet we seem less than enthusiastic about supporting them. On the other hand, for some reason, people seem inclined to assist illegal aliens who pretend to be in th same situation.

I have no qualm with those who are moved by their feelings of compassion to aid others. Let them. Let them take these people into their homes. Let them support them. Let them take responsibility for them, for their compliance with our laws. Let them teach their guests English. Let them pay their medical bills. Let them take care of them. Let them build them schools and teach them in Spanish. My hat's off to them. But, frankly, I see it as aiding and abetting a criminal in the commission of a crime. This is a free country. You are free to spend your money in any way you wish. BUT WHAT GIVES YOU THE RIGHT TO SPEND MINE?

If we give legal drivers licenses and health benefits to illegal immigrants, won't that just make Homeland Security's job easier?

Think about it.

An illegal immigrant can get a stolen I.D. and gets free health care, right now! But if we legalize illegal immigrants to get a drivers license and health benefits "legally", which ever agency it is, will be able to find the illegal and then the illegal will be deporting back to their home country.

But here's another point.....if there is some one trying to become a US Citizen, and is just waiting around for the paper work to be completed from a government office, should they be able to receive a drivers license and health benefits? Now remember, they're still in the eyes of the law today, considered an illegal immigrant.

Oh and here's one more.....what about people on Visas! They have to renew their visas every now and then. How does the law look upon them? And why.

Here's my take on the illegal immigrantion issues.......

Find out what country or countries are the most illegals are coming from.

We need to work with the country or countries the illegals are coming from.

Free Trade, sending US Business to that country, etc.

We need to do something, to help slow down illegal immigration into this country.

So my answer to this question is No. It will only cause more trouble on one point of a much larger issue.

Yes, I think the problem is that the levels of immigration are too high. within reason, immigration is a good thing, however, it has gone too far. Originally the post war immigrants to Britain were meant to assimilate but when this did not work we were then told that we were going to have a multi cultural society instead! Well, what we have is exactly the sort of problems you have outlined, also, I might add, we are on the way towards having Muslim caliphates in certain areas. Of course, the mifddle class PC brigade love to lecture us on equality but studiously avoid living with the immigrants! If you are fed up with where you live try moving to a smaller British city or town where the immigrants make up, say, 2 per cent of the population. That way you get a predominantly British identity but with tolerance an opportunity for the right number of immigrants creating a vibrant atmosphere for all. By the way, I heard a stat that more than 50 per cent of the UK poulation will be non-white by 2100. It sounds racist to talk about white and non white but it makes sense. After all, if the population of India was to become half Indian half white there would be controversies in that country about immigration. There is an identity to protect. Enoch Powell was right!

I'd say no because it is unsafe for the roads. If they can't read english than how can they understand the rules of the road? How will they be able to read the signs for safety? Giving them permission to drive a vehicle places too much risk on not only them but for other citizens. Driving in New York is a lot different than driving in Mexico. Health benefits they should receive after they have been made legal.

I don't have enough information to say about driver's licenses, I've heard good points either way.

But health benefits....absolutely not. I REALLY object to illegals being given benefits that Americans do not get, even as a Democrat. It pissed me off that I went to Arizona State University and had to pay $17000 tuition as an out of state student when an illegal could go and pay in-state.

Illegals must not obtain any US government privilages or ID's. They must not be allowed to vote. We should do just as Mexico does where most illegals come from:

No jobs for illegals

Also we are not a country of immigrants that is just insane. My wife is a legal immigrant and she is in the monority. That we are an open and kind people but we are gettign screwed. Corrupt politicians twist the words illegal and immigrant.

Following your logic; is it okay for me to move into your house and eat the food you pay for and require you to provide me with free health insurance from your taxes (I'd like to get a tax holiday as most illegals have now). This should work out great for you as you only bought your house it isn't your genetic right so...it's mine too. No boundries at all no borders, just from your effort to my comfort. Does that sound good to you? If you agree please send me an email and I'll send you a P.O. box where you can send me the keys to your house and I expect a check from you monthly as well...

No, they are not even supposed to be here and we have citizens that do not even have licenses or benefits. actually they should be able to get license but they couldn't because then the government would know they were illegal and sent them home or arrest them, whatever they would do. But for sure they should not get health benefits. Is it even really that hard to become 'not illegal' anyways?
