Dressing or Stuffing?

What do you call it?

Being from the South and marrying a gentleman from the North I have decided that if it is made with white bread it is stuffing and if made with cornbread it is dressing. lol

Update:

One other thing...ppl in the south have long been told not to put it in the bird due to possible bacteria, however ppl in the North have never heard this and still put the mixture in the bird.

Update 2:

If it has oysters then it is oyster dressing.

And it is especially good! :)

You got it right,me being from the south and my husband from the north to,its stuffing with white bread and dressing when made with cornbread.I have to make both kinds here for the holidays.

No, but you're almost right. To be stuffing it needs to be made out of white bread and actually stuffed into the turkey. Dressing is the cornbread mixture that Southerns bake in a casserole dish. Can't call it stuffing unless it's been "stuffed" into and cooked inside the turkey.

Now me being from the South will tell ya,

If it is made with cornbread and chicken, sage - Dressing

If it is made of anything else or out of a box, must be stuffing. So stuff the bird with that and serve the dressing so that some brown gravy can be put on it.

Well, i'm from the south and all I make is stuffing with breadcrumbs.

I think you could be right, although I have heard cornbread dressing referred to as stuffing

Also Stuffing is used to "stuff" the bird, dressing is cooked seperately.

Dressing is made on the stove and stuffing is made inside of the Turkey while it's baking. But I do like your label between the two. But what would you call it if it has Oysters in it, like we serve at my southern home?

Technically, I learned this from the Food Channel last year, "dressing" is made in a separate dish in the oven and "stuffing" is stuffed inside the bird. They can be made and can taste exactly the same way. It's all in how you cook it.

Stuffing just means it's stuffed into the crevice of the bird.. I make my stuffing/dressing with bread crumbs and cornbread. YUMMY

    Stuffing IN the bird.

Dressing up the OUTSIDE of the bird.

I prefer Dressing because I don't like the bird.

    Stuffing. Dressing goes on salad.

Gee, I live in the west and here it's stuffing if you put it IN the turkey and dressing if you don't. What it's made with has nothing to do with it.
