Hitler wanted to take over all the territories in Europe which could trace any connection with Germany, apparently arguing that the connection made them legitimately part of Germany.
Well, he got away with it several times in a fairly small way, and once in a big way when he took over the whole of Austria because everybody in it spoke German. And he didn't want a war over any of it, although he was better prepared for it than anybody else. But when he tried to just take over Poland, because a bit of it used to have been in Prussia, Britain and France declared war. Hitler probably hadn't expected that, because he'd got away with so much similar territory-grabbing up till then, but trying to save Poland was definitely the reason for the start of the war.
Different history books will maybe mention other reasons connected with the start of the war, and argue about which ones were the most important. That's what makes history so interesting.

It seems like it, certainly. Israel has committed the worst acts of oppression against the Palestinians, denounced by every human rights organization in the world. And the way things are looking in the Middle East, with Israel and the USA trying to bring about a conflict with Iran (which will in turn inflame other nations with interests in the region), I'd say Israel could very well be the next WWII Germany.

A bit confusing. Hitler took over as elected Chancellor in January 1933. He began to rearm Germany in 1935 while the world watched. He marched into the "demilitarized" Rhineland area of Germany along the Franco-German border in 1936. The world watched. In March 1938, he marched into Ausria and annexed it without a shot fired except for the executions of some opposition Austrian politicians. In September 1938, Hitler threatened to invade part of Czechoslovokia, "the Sudetenland", and England and france mobliized their armies for war. However, Hitler was "appeased" by France and English politicians and the direct intervention of his friend Mussolini, and allowed to take over the Sudetenland without war -- and the promise of no more aggression. However, in March 1939, he then took over the rest of Czechoslovokia. After threatening Poland with the deamand of a northern section of Poland, "the Corridor," which connected Germany to a part of it separated by traty in 1919, Hitler invaded Poland, even though England and france promised they would declare war on Germany if he did. Hitler invaded on September 1, 1939, and England and france gave him 48 hours to stop, and when he did not, they declared war on Germany on September 3rd.
Hitler then invaded in 1940 - Denmark, Norway, Belguim, Holland, Luxembourg, and France. In 1941, on June 22, 1941, he invaded Russia (Soviet Union) despite the fact he had a treaty of friendship (formally a "Non-Aggression pact)with them previously in 1939 which had allowed him to take over all those above named countries. Japan attacked the U.S. on December 7, 1941, and a state of war existed with them on that day. Japan was allied to Germany since 1940 and Hitler declared war on the United States in support of his ally, thinking he would have to fight us anyway, on December 11, 1941.

By causing WWII, can it be said that Germany responded to WWII? That doesn't amount to much logic....but there you have it.
