In our age of litany, you always hear of companies only disclosing dates of employment in fear of being sued by former employees as opposed to other information. How can a person prove slander by a former company?
At this point, what questions are you allowed to ask? What questions are improper? How can you pose an improper question to make it possible to answer?

You may be sued for anything for any act or omission which may jeopardize the interest of any other party or may have serious bearing on the society as a whole. But the instance which you are giving is wholly of your own which is up to you to decide.
