I believe most people put it up on thanksgiving day, but do you take it down before or after New Years?

There is no proper time. If you want to leave it up all year that is your decision. I try to put mine up shortly after Thanksgiving and take it down sometime in January.

I think you're mistaken if you really believe most people put the tree up on Thanksgiving Day. I'm sure some do, but not most!!

Some put it up Christmas Eve, for goodness' sake!

I think the Saturday after Thanksgiving, or the Saturday after that, somewhere around there is appropriate to put the tree up. And have it down no later than the night of the 1st. Some like to keep them up for a New Year's party, but if you're not having one, you should probably take it down sooner. We put our tree up as soon as we get back from the mountains with it, and usually go one of the first Saturdays after Thanksgiving. We have it down within a few days of Christmas.

But it's up to you, you can have it up as long or as short as you'd like.

    Merry Christmas~

We usually put our tree up a week or two into December, depending on when we find the right tree at the various tree lots. We normally take it down when we have the opportunity (usually a week or so into January)...however, last year, we took it down Christmas day, because a crack in the stand caused it to fall over twice! It was fairly amusing...

I put mine up two weeks before christmas and take it down the day after, because it gets too dry. I don't want to take a chance of it catching fire.

we usually put ours up 1 or 2 weeks before christmas so it doesn't die and we keep it up until it starts to turn brown b/c we like to enjoy the tree sense Christmas is only once a year.

Traditionally- in some Christian traditions, at least, the tree is taken down before Twelfth Night, or January sixth, depending on how you calculate it. Please see:

We take our tree down as soon after New Year's Day as we feel "up to it", usually on January 2.

But you can do what you like. Start your own tradition, that suits your own family.

There are amazing differences in how the holiday is celebrated.
