Should I be worried about possible lead contamination if a cup or a bowl gets unusually hot when microwaved?

I have a few ceramic cups and bowls that seem to become VERY hot (hotter than the food/drink that it holds) after being zapped in the microwave.

Does this mean they have high lead content and should I be worried about using them?

Try not to use them if you're concerned. Use the mircowave safe cups and bowls, then you can drink and eat without worrying :)
