Old sewing machines?

I have an old Riccar sewing machine [model # JA3 1424] that I know nothing about. I have searched the web and cannot find out anything about it. I would just like to know how old it is and a monetary value.

Riccar is still in operation today, specializing in homel sewing machines, and vacuum cleaners. Riccar began selling machines in the US after WWII; about 1951 or 52. They are made in the east by the Tacony company, a company that makes machines sold under several brand names.

While the machine is vintage, it's still quite common and not of any great value. There are few sewing machines from the twentieth century with any real value, especially post WWII machines. If it's working and has all it's parts including the manual you can sell for under a hundred dollars, probably in the fifty dollar range to someone who wants a machine but doesn't have a big budget. If it isn't working then it is of little use or value.

The only machines that have any great value are from the 1800's and earlier, or certain models of old Singer featherweights.

Time to clean out the garage and get rid of all the junk (oops.. I meant to say collectibles) you’ve been meaning to get rid of. I know Aunt Betsy’s old sewing machine will be worth something one day - but hadn’t you rather park your car in the garage - instead of having it full of stuff. Think about all those cold rainy days… Aunt Betsy’s old

Check out a preview of the latest in sewing machines from Pfaff. This definitely isn't an old school machine. There will be more previews coming soon, so I can't wait to see what Pfaff has coming this year.

This chic machine is a step ahead of the old ones as the most updated Windows power it and a cool touch screen at its top helps you take the graphic tutorials.

David Kestenbaum interviews workers putting together parts for the space shuttle -- many of which are done by hand with tools like sewing machines (one as old as 1918!) and masking tape. Interesting, and a little scary!

Sewing machines can make an excellent variety of plain or patterned stitches. They include means for gripping, supporting, and conveying the fabric past the sewing needle to form the stitch pattern. Most home sewing machines, and some industrial machines, use a two thread stitch called the lockstitch. Most industrial machines use an overlock stitch produced by a machine sometimes referred to as a serger. Some older machines produce a chain stitch. The material easily glides in and out of the machine without the hassle of needles and unessesary tools used in hand sewing. It was made by Isaac Singer

The fabric shifting mechanism may be a simple workguide or may be pattern-controlled (e.g., jacquard type). Some machines can create embroidery-type stitches. Some have a work holder frame. Some have a workfeeder that can move along a curved path, while others have a workfeeder with a work clamp.
