Yes a condom will help you.
Also a little more info just in case you didn't know....Do not let your boyfriend give you "oral" w/ a cold sore on his mouth too. This will also give you herpes. A cold sore on the mouth is the herpes virus and if he is "down there" it can be transmitted just as easily if he had an outbreak and you didn't wear a condom.
Also chicken pox is also the herpes virus...so lets say someone had chicken pox, scratched, broke open the sores and didn't wash their hands....then touched oneself "down there" this will also cause genital herpes. (something to know if you have children in the future...every child scratches and scratches "down there").
Source(s): Family member has this...above info came from the doctor and internet research. - 1 decade ago
No, not totally. I had a friend who always used a condom. However, when the girl sat on him and her vaginal juices got on his thighs, thats where he had outbreaks of the herpes virus. Supposedly, it is contagious when the partner has outbreaks, or sores. Easy to see on a male but not on a female. Valtrex only suppresses this disease to control the number of outbreaks. Many factors bring about outbreaks, stress, sickness, etc. To be honest, you have a high % of getting herpes at some point. Be glad he was honest in telling you.

Mostly. There is no 100% guarantee that you will not pick up the herpes but a condom is your safest method for avoiding this virus.

there is still what is called viral shedding and that goes for areas around the genitalia, so the condom is still not 100% effective to protect you from herpes.

Not necessarily. Contrary to the common myth condoms are not 100% reliable. They break and can have pinholes in them. It is not worth the risk, unless you KNOW you are spending the rest of your life with this guy.
