    Stomatas are found on the bottom of the plant to prevent excess water loss. By avoiding direct contact with the sun where the plant is most likely to lose water, the plant can preserve water. Crack man dont be playa hatin ya hear.

    there is generally better protection below, but also there is something to do with the humidity...on the lower leaf, there tends to be more humid and the leaf will tend to lose less water vapour from th plant ( via transpiration) as a result. ( the greater the difference in the relative humidities inside and out the leaf, the greater water loss ( if humidity is very low outside the leaf compated to inside).

    The upper surface of the leaf is more exposed to harsher conditions: sun, rain, etc.
